If you’re going to buy an exercise mat, you might as well get one that’s going to last you awhile rather than a new one every couple of months. Once you get used to a mat, you don’t really want to trade it in for another.
The HemingWeigh Extra Thick Foam Mat definitely falls under the category of “high quality.” The mats are constructed with cell material that makes floor workouts a lot comfier, and you won’t be sliding all over the floor as can happen with inferior quality mats.
It comes in the standard size of 70” x 23” which is perfect for almost any situation. The straps mean it’s easy to store and carry around at the same time, so it doesn’t matter if you’re going to be using It at home or at work, the HemingWeigh is convenient enough for all purposes.
The thickness rating comes in at ¼” which is the smallest of the five products I’ve reviewed, yet it still comes highly recommended for activities like yoga and Pilates.

Let’s face it, nobody like cleaning. After you’ve worked up a sweat and you’re feeling that warm fuzzy afterglow from a workout, you’re probably not going to want to spend a long time cleaning your exercise mat.
You will need to clean, so Sivan Health and Fitness have designed their mats to be ultra-easy to get rid of all those millions of minuscule germs, which means less time working and more time relaxing for you.
This mat is a little larger than the HemingWeigh, with an extra inch on the length and width. It’s also just as mobile with the integrated carry strap and the bottom of the mat has ridges to ensure you’re not sliding all over your house or bumping into your gym mates!
The thickness of this mat is also double the HemingWeigh’s, at ½” which is essential for those more rigorous workouts.

Of a similar size to the Sivan, the Prosource also comes with ½” thickness to make your work out comfier and means less wear and tear on your poor body. You’re already pulling it around this way and that, you don’t really want to feel the hard surface of the floor on top of that, too!
Being stable and secure is a must have for any exercise mat and the Prosource is about as sturdy as they come. It’s not too heavy either meaning that if you are carrying it to the gym or class, you don’t feel like you’ve had an arm workout on the way there.

The Prosource is easily one of the best exercise mats around. I know a big focus on these mats is for yoga, but it’s ideal for other activities too. As a martial artist, you’d need something with at least this thickness and stability to perform certain techniques.

The Sunny Health & Fitness mat is really easy to fold up to minimize the storage space required. It also comes at the largest size among the five reviewed here at 72” x 24”.
This mat also packs 2” of ultra-thin foam padding which is excellent for the more heavy duty exercises (or the more heavy-weight among us!).
Pilates can really take it out of you, and you’re going to need an exercise mat that is comfortable, padded and doesn’t soak up all your sweat!

The Sunny Health & Fitness is impeccable when it comes to matching all those needs, and it’s all rolled up into one comfy, useful mat.
5. Harbinger Durafoam Mat
Last but not least, we have the Harbinger Durafoam Mat.
The main draw here is the 5/8” antimicrobial treated durafoam. It’s possible to get infections from working on the same mat day in and day out so the treatment combats those little annoying bugs and means you won’t get sick as often as you might when using a mat that hasn’t been treated in this way.
That’s not to say that’s the Harbinger’s only benefit. It matches the Sunny Health in size as one of the largest mats. This exercise mat also has a moisture resistant surface which helps keep it cleaner for longer and less odorous.
The velcro straps are really easy to open/close as well as keeping the mat tightly rolled up, and it’s awesome for any kind of workout you’d want to do.

The Harbinger is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a more heavy duty mat for the more high impact exercises.

What Will You Use it For?
Are you going to be doing mainly yoga or Pilates? Is it just stretching and light workouts that you need it for? Are you going to be doing any kind of exercises that could leave you with cuts and bruises? Are you looking for a mat that soaks up moisture or is moisture resistant? Are you quite petite or do you have long legs?
I’ll cover those areas in the next section just to make it clearer.
Pros and Cons
For yoga, Pilates, and light workouts a ½” mat should be more than adequate as all you really need it for is to make things comfier than just lying on the floor. If you’ve used a ½” thick mat before and it wasn’t thick enough, you won’t suffer any downside from getting a thicker mat apart from it weighing more.
That’s another reason why it’s better to go with the lowest thickness possible while still retaining comfort. If you’re going to be carrying the mat around a lot, you want it to be as light as possible. It’s a mat, not a barbell!
For the more intensive workouts, you want a thicker heavier mat for two reasons. First of all, it’s less likely to move around as it’s heavier and second of all if you’re banging your feet and body on the mat often, you need more cushion for your fall.
Slip or Non-Slip?
Again, it all boils down to what you’re going to be doing. If you’re lying down and doing stretches, your own body weight is going to be keeping the thing down. If you’re placing the mat on top of a carpet, the friction from that will also help to keep it stable.
For any other exercise, where you’re on your feet and moving around, a sturdier mat that doesn’t slide around is preferable – otherwise, you’ll spend more time readjusting the mat than actually exercising!
Moisture Resistant or Moisture Soaking?
Ideally, you want the mat to soak up sweat if you’re moving around a lot as if it’s moisture resistant, you can slip and slide, and it’s possibly dangerous.
When a mat soaks moisture, it becomes heavier, stinky, and harder to clean properly so if you aren’t going to be moving around a lot and/or it’s more static exercises, it’s better to then get a moisture soaking mat.

For the vast majority of mat usage, this feature isn’t as important as the others. There are some situations where it’s useful, though, such as any combat exercise like martial arts or if you are hitting punch bags or anything like that.
A great exercise mat can mean the difference between a good workout and a bad workout. Getting into shape and staying that way can be a hard process and the fewer distractions you have while working out, the better.
