Drinking bowls and dishes can get full of saliva, hair, and other bits of debris. The water in the bowl before that might have been a bit stale and tepid, and your pet might be a bit put off drinking from it in the first place.
This is when it’s time to look for a bit more of an advanced way of getting your pet to drink water, and make sure it’s clean water too. There’s plenty of pet water fountains out there, and whether you’re looking for the best water fountain for cats, dogs, or any other similar pet, there’s a lot to choose from.
To make life a little easier for you, I’ve compiled a list of 10 of what I feel are the best water fountains on the market, combined with their features and a buyer's guide at the end, which will give you more insight on the features.
Top-Rated Water Fountains for Cats - Comparison Table
Best Cat Fountain Reviews
The YOUTHINK Auto Circulating Indoor Water Fountain is a very popular brand because it’s easy to clean and it’s very quiet too. Those two features alone elevate it into the best water fountain for cats, but there’s more that might tickle your fancy too.
This pet fountain comes with 3 different modes you can use which basically change how the water streams and flows and you can change it based on your pets needs accordingly. If you attach all the parts, then the flower will emit long streams of water for your pet to drink from.
Remove the “disc” part of the flower, and there’s a lot more bubbling going on, which can upset some pets but entice others. Lastly, you can remove the flower completely and just let the water ripple silently, like the effect wind has across a lake.
If you’re worried about getting water on your floors from messy pets or the fountain itself, a splash mat is included, but most people report that they don’t even need to use it. It’s a useful item to have, nonetheless, and there’s no harm in putting it down to guarantee you don’t damage your floors or create a hazard from your new water fountain!
- 3 Different Settings
- Easy to Clean
- Removable Parts for Customization
- Super Quiet
- Splash Mat Included (But not required)
The YOUTHINK Auto Circulating Fountain does need electricity to work properly so if you’re going away and this will be your pet’s only source of water, it might be best to have a backup plan too, just in case.
Apart from that, this is an excellent fountain for most pets, and if you’re especially looking for a cat drinking fountain, then the YOUTHINK is perfect for that.
The Catit Flower Fountain is another cat fountain that utilizes the popular “flower fountain” design that offers you three distinct and separate ways to use it.
Like the YOUTHINK, you can use the flower and disc provided to create long streams of water for your cat to drink, remove the disc to create more of a bubbling effect, or remove the flower and disc entirely to have more of a rippling flow effect.
This particular model has been designed more with cats in mind, and there’s quite a bit going on before the water reaches your cat's mouth.
The Catit has a triple action filter which removes magnesium and calcium to prevent urinary tract diseases, removes chlorine odors and bacteria to make the water more appealing and healthy, and also retains stray hairs, sediment, and debris to stop all of that getting into your cat's body.
If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of your cat, then those features are definitely worth considering as they will have a significant impact on your cat's health.
The filters themselves are guaranteed to purify the drinking water for around 30 days, and after that, it’s not going to operate at peak efficiency, so you will want to replace the filter.
- Designed to Provide Fresh and Healthy Water for Cats
- Compact Design to Minimize Floor Space Required
- Removes Magnesium + Calcium to Prevent Urinary Tract Diseases
- Removes Chlorine Odors and Bacteria
- Retains Stray Hairs, Sediment, and Debris
The Catit Flower Fountain is an excellent way to provide healthy drinking water for your cat(s). There will be some ongoing costs in terms of replacing the filter every 30 days, but it’s worth it for the benefits.
You can probably push it past 30 days, but there will be a reduction in quality. If you want to be sure of giving your pets clean, quality water then the Catit Flower Fountain is a great choice.
The next fountain I’d recommend for you is the PetSafe Drinkwell Ceramic Avalon Fountain for Pets. Because PetSafe is well established in the industry, they make quite a few outstanding products for pets, and their fountain range is no different.
The Avalon Fountain includes a replaceable filter that stops all the hairs and debris getting into your pet’s water supply as well as removing bad tastes and odors which might otherwise put your pet off drinking it in the first place.
To make the fountain more interesting to pets, the Avalon also uses free-falling streams. It allows for a range of snouts and tongues to get their respective bodies hydrated!
Knowing that you are the one who is going to put the work in and your pet is just the beneficiary, they’ve made the Avalon from easy to clean porcelain. And there’s also free customer care available whether you’d prefer to call them, have a text conversation or email and the service is available 6 days a week.
It just means that if you ever do come across a problem, query, or you just want to give feedback, the means are easily at your disposal.
- Replaceable Filter Removes Bad Tastes, Odours, Hair, and Debris
- Free Falling Streams Encourage Use
- Easy to Clean Porcelain
- Free Customer Care Available by Call/Text/Email 6 days a Week
- 70oz. Water Capacity
I’ve got a few PetSafe products that I’ve selected for this list, and that’s because they have some great features coupled with a decent price and excellent customer care too. The Avalon Fountain itself is easy to use and setup, and it requires minimal maintenance from you.
It just requires cleaning now and then, and having the filter replaced once it gets a bit clogged up.
This is the second product I’m recommending from PetSafe, and it’s the PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain. It’s a lot larger than the Avalon and part of the reason is it’s massively increased water storage supply of 168oz, compared with the Avalon’s 70oz.
This is especially useful for larger and or multiple pets, and it means less work for you because you won’t have to refill the fountain as often.
Like all the good fountains, the Platinum uses a replaceable filter design to eradicate bad odors and tastes while also stopping the undesirable elements getting into your pet's water supply.
The filter itself is made from coconut shells which naturally purify the water due to a carbonization process.
Without making you sit down in a chemistry class, the way it works is the shells are initially put through a carbonization process, removing everything but carbon and then oxygen is added to it, and the resulting mix absorbs the basic water contaminants. Chlorine and other undesirable elements are removed, and the resulting water is a lot better than pets are used to.
PetSafe have also made the Platinum Fountain dishwasher safe which saves you more time and effort than if you were to manually wash it every time. It’s recommended to use the top shelf of the dishwasher.
Fountains can be noisy, but the Platinum reduces this problem by incorporating a little ramp that cushions the fall of the water and acts as a bit of a buffer to stop the water sloshing around too.
There’s also a separate pre-filter that catches hair and other kinds of large debris that might otherwise have your pet pulling a funny face and coughing up hairballs.
The snap-on lid serves a dual purpose of easy access to the filter for when you want to replace or clean it and also protecting it for curious pets that like to play with things like that.
- Replaceable Filter Removes Bad Tastes & Odours
- 168oz. Water Capacity
- Dishwasher Safe
- Filters Made from Coconut Shells (Naturally Purify Water)
- Receiving Ramp Reduces Noise from Falling Water
The Platinum Fountain is one of the best pet fountains you can get with all the impressive features it packs. Whether you’re looking for a dog or cat water fountain, the Platinum will serve you well in most cases.
The cleaning’s a bit easier because it’s dishwasher friendly and the water capacity means you won’t be needing to refill it as much which means more time to yourself.
If you’re a cat lover with multiple furry friends, you might need a fountain that caters for the large and small and anything in between. The Cat Mate Pet Fountain is designed with this in mind, and there are multiple areas of varying heights that your cats can drink from, whether they like to drink standing up or lying down, and whether they’re big or small.
The Cat Mate is a very quiet fountain too which is perfect for keeping certain cats interested. Sometimes a noisy fountain can put them off, and it’s probably going to be annoying for you too. A noisy motor and the constant sound of water can play havoc with your bowels, and that’s one problem you don’t want to have!
Featuring a replaceable carbon water filter, the Cat Mate produces good tasting, purified water that your cats will love and keep them coming back for more. This will result in your cats being well hydrated and less prone to diseases that being dehydrated can cause.
The Cat Mate Pet Fountain is also dishwasher safe, and it helps you reduce the buildup of limescale that can seriously impact the quality of water your cats receive.
To make sure you’re getting the most for your money, there’s also a 3-year guarantee with this product, so if you have any problems with it within that period, you can get a replacement without having to fork out for a new one.
- Multiple/Varying Height Drinking Areas
- Ramp Reduces Noise/Splashing
- Very Quiet Pump
- Polymer-Carbon Water Filter (Replaceable)
- 3 Year Guarantee
- Dishwasher Safe
- 70oz Capacity
The Cat Mate Fountain is great if you’re a multiple cat owner. Even if it’s just the one cat you own, you can buy this without having to worry about getting more cats or what position your cat likes to drink from best.
It’s easy to clean, has the much needed replaceable carbon filter, it’s as quiet as a mouse (so your cats can hear the real ones), and the 3-year guarantee means you can rest assured you won’t be needed to pay for a new one for at least that long.
The Petphabet Cat Water Fountain Bowl is a little bit different when it comes to the filters. This particular fountain uses a 3-layer filter which has a plastic mesh filter, carbon mesh filter, and isolated cotton filter. Each filter contributes something to the water purification process, whether it's large particles, hair and debris, or bad tastes and odors.
The capacity of the Petphabet Fountain Bowl is a little less than the other fountains I’ve reviewed, at 67oz, but you’re able to see exactly how much water is left because the entire bowl is transparent, which is a definite bonus than having to check regularly.
Not all of the filter needs replacing, just the mesh part because that’s the bit that stops the debris and hairs from getting into the water.
The fountain runs nice and quietly and there’s no risk of your pet injuring itself on it, even if it’s the curious type.
There’s also a nice 2-year warranty to make sure you’re covered for 24 months in case anything happens that shouldn’t happen with your fountain. As long as you’re using it normally, you’re covered.
- Semi Transparent to Easily Check Water Level
- 3 Layer Filter
- 67oz Capacity
- Replaceable Mesh
- Safe/Quiet Operation
- 2 Year Warranty
The Petphabet Cat Water Fountain Bowl is wonderful if you’re looking for a cat drinking fountain or something similar and you don’t have to check inside to see how much water remains. It’s easy to see the water level due to the fountain being transparent.
It runs really well, and the filter system is just as good as the other fountains I’m recommending.
The Uniclife Pet Water Fountain is a pretty simple fountain. It uses a carbon filter like the other fountains, and you can replace the carbon filter too. You just remove the old one and replace with a new filter.
It’s a nice step up from a water bowl with the extra benefit of a stream of constant water making a pleasant sound to soothe your busy mind!
It’s also designed to run quietly at night, so you don’t need to worry about turning it off because it won’t be bothering anyone. If anybody decides to go into the kitchen for a midnight snack, the handy blue LED light will stop them putting their foot into the lovely wet fountain.
This is something I’ve come to love about water fountains as I was always having to replace the socks I was wearing due to getting them completely wet from this type of mishap!
If you’re worried that it might stop working properly and leave you in the lurch, you’ll be glad to know that this particular pet fountain also comes with a 1-year warranty for the water pump – the thing that’s making it a water fountain in the first place.
If there’s a downside to the fountain, it’s the water capacity which is the lowest among the ones I’ve reviewed at 60oz. It’s not a massive difference, but it’s something to consider when faced with two equally appealing fountains.
Lastly, the Uniclife Water Fountain is also dishwasher safe, as long as you’re using the top rack, so you don’t need to worry about the menial chore of washing the fountain by hand.
- Carbon Filter Purifies Water
- Silent Operation at Night Time
- Blue LED Light Illuminates When Dark
- 1 Year Water Pump Replacement
- Dishwasher Safe (Top Rack)
- 60oz Capacity
This is a decent fountain with basic, practical features. The water is purified by an activated carbon process, and you can remove and replace the carbon filter.
It’s promoted on its silent running at night time, but it’s pretty quiet during the day too and makes a nice water feature if your pets aren’t bothering to drink from it.
I know what you’re thinking… “Another PetSafe fountain… really?” Honestly, they’re not paying me under the table, it’s just they have quite a few quality products that come highly recommended by the customers who’ve bought them.
The main difference in this pet water fountain is its 5 different free falling streams for you to experiment with. It’s designed to get your pet interested in the fountain, and you’ll be able to tell which is your pet's favorite as you’ll notice a sudden increase in its need to relieve itself!
The replaceable carbon filter is just as you’d expect, with protection from debris, hair, bad smells, odor, and bad water, making sure your pet is getting the purest water it can possibly drink.
If your pet is anything like my dog, it will be a lot better than the usual muddy puddles she tries to drink.
The Drinkwell 360 is dishwasher safe – just with the top rack – and with it being a PetSafe product, you also benefit from free customer care whether you prefer to call, text, or email them.
The Drinkwell 360 also has a large water storage capacity, weighing in at 128 oz., which is a lot bigger than most water fountains.
- 5 Different Streams to Use
- Replaceable Carbon Filter
- Dishwasher Safe (Top Rack)
- Free Customer Care (Call/Text/Email)
- 128oz Capacity
The PetSafe Drinkwell is a great pet water fountain that comes with a bit more customizability than most. The five different streams you can use should appeal to most pets and also to your own liking too.
The more than ample water capacity means you can service multiple pets and not worry about filling the fountain up as often.
The Catit Design Senses Fountain is a great cat fountain if you’re looking to hydrate your feline pets. It’s designed to be used by cats and doesn’t worry about accessibility for other pets. Because the Senses Fountain was made for meowers, it means that nearly every cat owner will find it a great way to siphon pure water to their cats, keeping them healthier and preventing possible diseases from dehydration.
The filter is removable and replaceable and does a good job of keeping unwanted elements like hair, dirt, food, and other impurities from getting into the water supply. The recirculation of the water cools it while freshening it through the filter and means your cat(s) will be able to have access to great water for as long as the fountain has some.
The Catit Design Senses is also very easy to clean. There’s not much to it, and I highly recommend taking it apart once a week or so just to make sure the pump is clean, and there’s no buildup of muck anywhere. It won’t take you too long, and your cat will appreciate it.
The Senses Fountain also has a great water capacity, at 100 oz., which is more than enough to quench a cat’s thirst for quite a while.
Because it’s designed for cats, it’s also really easy for cats to take to it and to drink from it so if you’re worried that your cat won’t like this fountain, you should be pleasantly surprised!
- Filtration Removes Debris/Hair & Other Undesirables
- Recirculation Cools and Freshens the Water
- Designed for Easy Access to Cats
- Easy to clean
- 100 oz. Capacity
If you’re new to pet fountains or you’re looking for a suitable replacement, the Design Senses Fountain is a great one to pick.
It’s simple and easy to use, magic to clean and it’s primarily focused on getting cats to drink more water, and the cross between a traditional water bowl and next gen water fountain works really well.
If you’re looking for a more sizeable cat fountain, the PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Fountain is awesome! It comes with twin fountains, which are basically two spouts of water at opposite ends of the tower, so it’s a lot better for multiple cats if they want to drink at the same time. They don’t have to fight or get put off by another cat using it.
With it being PetSafe, the filters are replaceable, and there are two kinds in the Ceramix Pagoda Fountain. First is the usual carbon filter and second is the foam filter, which does an excellent job of keeping out unwanted debris, hair, and large particles before they reach the pump, and subsequently, your pet’s body!
The fountain is made from ceramic, and the entirety of it is pretty easy to access for cleaning purposes, which makes it a ten-minute job once a week or so.
It comes with a standard 70 oz. water capacity, which is plenty for several days with multiple cats and if you do have any problems, questions or feedback, PetSafe have their own customer service team that you can call, text, or email 6 days a week.
- Twin Fountains
- Replaceable Carbon Filter
- Easy to Clean Ceramic Design
- 70oz Capacity
- Free Customer Care via Call/Text/Email
This is probably the best pet fountain if you’re looking for one that’s a decent size for multiple pets. As long as they’re around the size of an average cat, they won’t have any trouble drinking from the fountain and won’t drink the thing dry too soon.
The filtering system is excellent, and they’re also replaceable to make sure your pets are always getting the best water possible.
Whether you’re looking for the best water fountain for cats or dogs, you might have a few questions on how the different features are going to benefit you and your pets.
The water capacity of a fountain is pretty important and how much your pet needs to drink per day might be a mystery to you so if you only want to skim the features, read that one at least.
It’s worth bearing in mind that it’s always worth buying a fountain rather than sticking with a dish, since fresh and pure water can help prevent diseases which might otherwise hit you with a hefty vets bill, and also cause suffering to your poor pet.
It’s all well and good reading a list of fountains with their different water capacities, but how much water does a cat or dog really need in a day? For cats, they require an average of around 2-4 oz. of fresh water a day in addition to the food that it eats (as it gets water from that too).
The kind of food your cat is eating makes a big difference on how much water it needs to drink to meet its quota. A cat needs around 0.67oz per 1lb that it weighs, and if eating dry food, the cat might need as much as 7oz of drinking water.
If eating wet food, it might need as little as 1 oz. or less. When you consider that a lot of the fountains I’ve reviewed have around 70 oz. or more, that’s at least 10 days worth of water for 1 cat if you fill it up completely at the start.
The math is similar for dogs (0.85 – 1.7oz per 1lb), but they tend to need more water than cats (it’s probably all that fetching sticks they do). At most, they’ll need around twice as much water (pound for pound) as a cat, so unless you have a large dog, the fountain water should last a few days at least.
How useful is it to have a water fountain with customizable parts? It depends on your pet really, or perhaps your personal preference. Some pets are very picky when it comes to water fountains, but in general, they like to drink from a source of running water, so fountains will always have the edge over normal drinking bowls.
A fountain with customizable parts can benefit you if you have pets of varying sizes or pets that are very wary. You can interchange the parts and see what works best and it saves you the pain of having to return the one you just bought to see if you can get a better replacement that your pet might like.
It’s almost always advisable to pick up a fountain with a warranty, just in case it turns faulty after a while. It will save you money and guarantee a working fountain for at least the length of the warranty.
As long as you use the fountain in the way it’s intended and don’t void your warranty, you’re okay!
Easiness of Cleaning/Dishwasher Safe
To make sure the fountain stays in top working condition, you’re going to need to clean it at least once a week. It ensures you can catch any problems before they become a major issue and also makes sure your pet keeps receiving the best water the fountain can give it.
If the water source becomes tainted, many pets will be put off drinking it and try to find other sources, as well as drink less than they need to. Because of all these potential issues, cleaning is mandatory and so why not make it as easy as possible.
Most the fountains I’ve reviewed have been checked to make sure they are dishwasher safe. If I’ve found that they are, then the features will show it. They’re only safe to wash in the top shelf of a dishwasher though so be warned!
The filters do a great job of keeping the water clean, and in fact are the only thing stopping all the bad stuff from getting into your pet's mouth. The filters themselves will eventually get clogged up though and can stop working efficiently, so it’s highly recommended to replace them.
It is an extra expense, but it means your pet will continue to receive quality water, which is the reason you bought it in the first place, right!?
The filters that aren’t replaceable will mean that you end up buying a whole new fountain, which can cost more in the long run.
Fountains use motors/pumps to keep the water moving, and the machinery can make a decent amount of noise. This can put pets off as well as annoy the owners, so many fountain manufacturers do their very best to reduce the noise output of their product and make it a selling point.
If a fountain is especially quiet, I’ve noted that in the features and if you like a peaceful house then it will be a bonus for you too. Sound carries a lot more at night and a small annoyance in the day can turn into a real headache at night, so if any of that is a concern to you, I highly recommend picking up one of the quieter ones.
That said, each fountain I’ve reviewed here is pretty decent, and none of them are going to sound like a set of roadworks!
